I am working with InDesign to produce a training manual that contains recipe cards of multiple products. Some method sections are duplicated on every page, and as the manual progresses the content as been revised. This creates a lot of backtracking to ensure all the previously build cards are the same. I am about to begin a new updating phase of the manual I was considering the use of XML as a method to edit the duplicated content more efficiently. Does anyone have any experience building training manuals, I would appreciate any ideas regarding the handling of this type of project.

Regards!

I would like to transition from ASP.NET development to designing and building sites on a freelance basis. I have the basic mechanics of XHTML/CSS, and am about to start classes in Photoshop/Flash and "Web Publishing" at my community college in a few weeks. Can anyone give any pointers on the best way to actually get started? I think that the first thing I need is a portfolio, but how to get the work to populate it? My thoughts on this so far are: see how far I can build on school projects to make them worthy, find a few people to make free websites for? Am I headed in the right direction so far?

I have just completed an XHTML & CSS course and now trying to decide which course to take next. I'm seeing a lot of need for those that have PHP skill, but I also see a lot of need for Javascript, C#, C++, VB, etc. Can someone please help me lead me in the right direction.

A great book that I use is: Building Findable Websites, ISBN: 0-321-52628-7, I got my copy at Barnes and Noble but I'm fairly certain you can get a copy from Amazon. It's about 240 pages -fairly small for a computer book - and is a quick read that will give you some background that you will find helpful. It's focus is Web Standards, SEO, and Beyond. Price was $40 U.S.

Even if you aren't doing the work it's wise to make sure the 'advice' you are getting is accurate. Knowledge is power; especially when you are the one paying someone else for theirs.

Hi TrackBeatz, check out a few tutorials on using Flash and actionscript, or if your looking for an alternative program you can explore a program called swish http://www.swishzone.com/index.php . If time is important you could always get a freelance flash designer/developer to do the work for you, depending on the amount of work it may even cost as much as the software.

Hey and welcome to the world of web design.

My advice is to start using tables and position the width etc of each cell till you get a good looking layout.

A more advanced approach and the industry standard is to use CSS cascading style sheets. Using CSS you could add a absolute style to the img tag. eg

Hello I just had my site created DJsPaintingInc.com and am trying to learn about SEO. Of course the company that created the site is working on it but I would love to learn more on my own to assure they are doing the best job possible. Do you know of any books or articles that may educate me enough to get up to speed. Thanks and if any of you have time feel free to provide feedback on the site. As a small business owner I often have to learn from experts as we can not afford full time staff for such projects.

Thanks I will forward your advice. My last question is you stated that even though the text is unselectable it is still present in the code but does this reduce the googlebots ability to read or hinder it in any way. My goal is to keep working on SEO to get my site up there. The goal is to come up when searching for painters in bloomington normal. I wonder how long it will take for us to rise up in the rankings. Any other suggestions are more than welcome.

DJ no need to stress, even though your text is unselectable, it is still present in the source code and will get spidered by googlebot etc.

I would suggest that the menu links in the header should be text rather than images, these are keyword rich and at the top of the page. Also shorten the length of your title.

My site DJsPaintingInc.com was recently designed but you can not highlight the text or any part of the site. I have been told this will hurt ALOT with ranking and searches. They claim it is because of the way I wanted the site designed in terms of appearance. Please Please tell me your thoughts on this and how it will impact my site.
My old site had the same issue so I had told this company it could not be that way here. Am I worrying too much or can you really not have a the appearance I desire without sacrafice of SEO. Please any input is apprecaited as I am stressed.

With both libraries functioning well, my own decision came down
to the fact that the jQuery team tends to take into consideration the thoughts and concerns of design/development communities who would like the major js libraries to function well TOGETHER if ever the need arise, while the developers of Mootools have a very pronounced leaning in favor of an exclusive/proprietary library.

Since both function well, I feel it's clearly best to adopt the library that at least TRIES to play nice with others.

I find that jQuery is a very community focused project while Mootools is a strictly Mootools focused project.

Option1

Option2

option3

Styling it

To get started, all of the lists need to be jigged around a bit — namely, the padding and margin set to zero and the list-style set to none:

ul {
 padding: 0;
 margin: 0;
 list-style: none;
 }

Now we need to transform the first-level list into a horizontal menu bar. There are a number of methods to do this, discussed in detail elsewhere. We could display the list-items inline (display: inline), but for this example, we are going to float them to the left.

li {
 float: left;
 position: relative;
 width: 10em;
 }

The position has been set to relative because we want the position of the second-level, nested lists to be relative to the first-level list items and the width has been set to space it out a bit. The dropdown menu is coming together.

The next step is to tackle the second-level lists that will be the dropdowns themselves:

li ul {
 display: none;
 position: absolute;
 top: 1em;
 left: 0;
 }

This positions the second-level lists absolutely (pulling them out of the flow of HTML into a world all of their own) and sets their initial state to not be displayed. If you substitute display: none with display: block, you will see the need for the top and left properties in Internet Explorer, because without them, IE will align the second-level lists to the top right of their relative parent rather than the bottom left. Unfortunately, this IE fix will mess things up in browsers like Opera, so add the following CSS to reset the top and left properties on all but IE browsers:

li > ul {
	top: auto;
	left: auto;
	}

And now, making the sucker work. To make a second-level list appear when its parent list item is “rolled over,” we simply need to add the following:

li:hover ul, li.over ul{ display: block; }

Which says that any list that is nested in a list item that has the cursor hovering over it should be displayed.

Finally, because the lists are floated left, the content underneath it needs to be set free of the floating by applying clear: left to it.

Now add this JavaScript

Heres an example: http://www.htmldog.com/articles/suckerfish/bones/

alright so now im trying to make a cascading(dropdown) menu for my customers page
i basically want to take the pre-existing menu bar and add drop down menu effects to the products and designs portions

i have several images already made, now i need the code to make them functional

rockstar.we.bs/images/menu_02.gif
rockstar.we.bs/images/2menu_02.gif
rockstar.we.bs/images/2menu_03.gif
rockstar.we.bs/images/hilite1.gif
rockstar.we.bs/images/hilite2.gif
rockstar.we.bs/images/hilite3.gif
rockstar.we.bs/images/hilite4.gif

all the code i have found so far has been for plain menus
and doesnt refer to how to add images for backgrounds

any help would be appreciated,
thanks

yeah it seems to work for IE7 as well
most of my images have been placed in tables as background images as well, so the "oncontextmenu=false" in the head works better as well

im not too worried about going as far as watermarking though because we have a downloadable catalog as well, so they could just as easily download that, and the watermark will begin blocking views that our customers will need to see
so im more of trying to slow them down than stop them

but thanks,
that helps me out alot

hey rockstar.

In most modern browsers you can disable the right-click menu for a particular image. To do so, you can use the event handler oncontextmenu="return false;" within the IMG tag that defines your image:

As for alt-printscreen you can try this but i don't think it works for IE7.

Basicly if anyone can see it, they can and will find a way to grab it. There are hundreds of different ways to get images, browser cache, image capture software.. even the snippet tool in vista. I wouldn't waste my time implementing any of the suggestions above, but rather digital signatures or watermarks.

Have a read up on this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_watermarking

Some companies like digimarc have services to track other sites using your images.

good luck,

Hi
I work as the website designer for a graphics design studio
in the past we have had some of our designs stolen from the site by people who have either used the right-click-save method or the alt-printscreen method
I know there is a way to keep people from using the right-click-save method, as i have seen it on other pages

I would like to know,
a. how do you do that
b. how, if you could, would you stop the alt-printscreen method
and finally
c. are there any other ways people might be able to steal my images, and if so, how would i stop them from doing so?

thanks
