A great book that I use is: Building Findable Websites, ISBN: 0-321-52628-7, I got my copy at Barnes and Noble but I'm fairly certain you can get a copy from Amazon. It's about 240 pages -fairly small for a computer book - and is a quick read that will give you some background that you will find helpful. It's focus is Web Standards, SEO, and Beyond. Price was $40 U.S.

Even if you aren't doing the work it's wise to make sure the 'advice' you are getting is accurate. Knowledge is power; especially when you are the one paying someone else for theirs.

Hello I just had my site created DJsPaintingInc.com and am trying to learn about SEO. Of course the company that created the site is working on it but I would love to learn more on my own to assure they are doing the best job possible. Do you know of any books or articles that may educate me enough to get up to speed. Thanks and if any of you have time feel free to provide feedback on the site. As a small business owner I often have to learn from experts as we can not afford full time staff for such projects.

Hi mserika, welcome to DA.

Usually its as simple as opening the the file that contains the <meta> tags (header if its a template) and editing the content="".

If your having troubles with a template then the meta data maybe stored in the database.

What software runs your site? wordpress, joomla etc

Do your pages contain a significant amounts of similar content (i.e. the HTML for the page template, does that make up say 90% of your HTML)?

Are the page <title> tags unique to each page?

Is your sitemap absolutely essential? If not then I would suggest that you remove it. If you don't benefit from it in anyway, there is not much reason in creating one in the first place.

The front page of the site has a list of links to all areas, even dynamically generated pages. I have also generated a google XML sitemap that is in the root directory, and submitted to google using the webmaster tools.

Over the last few weeks since submitting the sitemap, most of my pages are being listed as supplemental results in googles SERP's.

Is this be because I have both links to all areas in the index page and then these same links in the sitemap?

I don't think search engines have a problem with them as most of the time they are called Search Engine Friendly URLs. Just about every site that uses a blogging app (like WordPress), a forum (like bbpress/punbb) or a cms uses modrewrite to clean up the urls. The best thing about mod rewrite is how easy it is for anybody.

Here is an older article on it: http://www.websitepublisher.net/article/search_engine_friendly_urls/5 you can find plenty more searching Google.

Whats your opinion on using modrewrite to change my URLS to easily readable paths.

eg. http://mysite.com/review/topic-one/
or should it be, http://mysite.com/review/topic-one
without the trailing / ?

Will SE's think that they are directories and not give a better PR?

it depends what you're urls look like and whether the keywords are worth the effort involved.

SE's (google anyway) see words seperated by an underscore as one word.

Its a little of everything. Like Drew said its best to use descriptive titles and file names. It also helps for keywords and those linking to your site or that image. I would make sure you can afford the bandwidth if your looking to get several images listed on Google Images as it could start to add up depending of course on the subject of your image.

Honestly I don't really know the difference in dash vs underscore, I personally use underscores alot in my coding scripts and sites. However, while searching Google I found this article that says its best to use dashes when it comes to Search Engines.

I'm sure there are more resources on this topic.
