I would like to transition from ASP.NET development to designing and building sites on a freelance basis. I have the basic mechanics of XHTML/CSS, and am about to start classes in Photoshop/Flash and "Web Publishing" at my community college in a few weeks. Can anyone give any pointers on the best way to actually get started? I think that the first thing I need is a portfolio, but how to get the work to populate it? My thoughts on this so far are: see how far I can build on school projects to make them worthy, find a few people to make free websites for? Am I headed in the right direction so far?
