I've been looking at a couple of web hosting sites recently, but not sure which is worth going for. So a few questions.

what host to you use ? are you happy with it?

which hosts are most renown / recommended ?
(a host practical for a web designer by preference )

I've looked at the following: (what is ur opinion on them, maybe you use one of them) ?
      servage.net
      hostingzoom.com
      mediatemple.net
      dreamhost.com
      godaddy.com
      enom.com
      dotster.com

Is it better to host with a company in the country you live ? or is it of no importance.

What sort of Bandwidth should be the minimum ?

The best company to host with is rackspace, although most people go for lower budget options. I pay 8 times more for my server than my last company paid, but I have brilliant support and about 5% of the hosting related time consumption my last company had, therefore it is well worth it.

Rackspace support is fanatical, thats there motto and it is totally true. Support is what you need when it comes to web hosting, and it is much more important than bandwidth, unlimited subdomains and unlimited whatever..

As for hosting in your own country, I would always do this as clients prefer it. It doesn't sound quite so dodgy as having their website saved in another country. Network latency is the key thing that makes a server is your own country perform better, but not sure exactly what this is or what it means.

I have used DreamHost and the price is very good, and even better if you google a $96 coupon, you can get a years worth of hosting for under $30.

But I only used that for mucking around with before I got any work. They massively oversell bandwidth and space, so if you ever setup a file download mirror (like mirroring the linux distro isos, potentially up to 4.7gb each) on your account it wouldn't surprise me if they cancelled you account.

I've used 1and1.com previously for a very basic site. I wasn't pleased with their support, nor did I like their custom control panel, it was waay over complicated. Some of you may have also read my thread (can't post the URL? ugh...) about a problem that a friend of mine is having with them, whether it is in their right to deny access to the domain or not would indicate what kind of host they are.

I've been using dreamhost for a year now and I'm satisfied with them quite a bit. Cheap prices, good download speeds (for my pages at least, haven't tested out large files), support was very speedy with its responses, even at 2am. Their custom panel is, as previously said, not impressive, but easier to work around then 1and1's I've found, and they are constantly improving it. I like their sense of humor, all the way from their monthly newsletter to their blogs. Also they have dreamhoststatus.com, a blog that will keep you up to date on any downtime or maintenance going on. I recently added it to my Google Reader and check in when a new post is made to see if it will affect me at all. I'm not too sure if other hosts have a similar blog set up, but it's one thing I've begun to like about dreamhost. All in all, I'm a happy dreamhost customer.

    5. I personally use A Small Orange and love them. I've gone through several hosts in the past including Host Gator and have found ASO to be great. Great prices, amazing support, and have never had a problem yet. With Host Gator I had nothing but problems. FTP was really slow for me and alot of people on their forums, tons of downtime due to problems on their end (they said they had some users taking up all the resources and would take care of it, however this went on for just over a month before I left). Support with HostGator took forever mostly because the Level 1 support staff couldn't answer anything, everything including simple questions or requests had to be moved up to higher level people, which of course made the time longer.

I used InsiderHosting for about 3 years and had great support and speeds and uptime were great.

    7. I've never heard of them but here is a review on them.

They have live chat and a toll-free number, which most companies are dropping to the cost of keeping it up.
